Soft Fork

In contrast to a hard fork, a soft fork can be used without updating software, because the new version is compatible to the old version of a blockchain. In other words, a soft fork is an update, which is recognized as valid by the old software without creating new chains.

As on the image above, the main chain is compatible to both old and new version without branching, so the update is not mandatory. However mining nodes must be updated because they need to analyze the new types of transactions to verify all the transactions.
