A cryptocurrency is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses strong cryptography to secure financial transactions, control the creation of additional units, and verify the transfer of assets. A cryptocurrency is sometimes called a virtual currency but these are not the same. A virtual currency is a currency without an actual form which even includes easily charged currencies in the internet; therefore a cryptocurrency is under the category of a virtual currency. A cryptocurrency is widely categorized into coin and token.

Coin: cryptocurrency which has its own mainnet and consists of an individual ecosystem. Bitcoin, Ethereum, EOS are all coins.

Token: cryptocurrency which does not own a mainnet but exists like a voucher for a particular service in other platform. EOS used to be a token made in Ethereum platform, but now is a coin after building independent mainnet.

Cryptocurrency is encrypted and distributed by blockchain technology, and used as currencies in some networks. It is issued with its own mechanism without any central organization. It works with a P2P method, and the transfer histories and account balances are saved in distributed storages for the network users to verify and manage by themselves. It is primarily designed to be a payment method, however since it doesn't have a face value and often becomes an investment method, the price formulates by the demand of the market through the exchange.
